Welcome people with dignity
People have migrated for thousands of years and will continue to migrate as they seek safety and survival. Many factors drive migration, including war and violence, climate change, and the need for shelter, food, clean water, and other essentials of life.
Receiving countries should create structures and systems to welcome new immigrants. Policies such as jailing immigrants and building border walls only push people to attempt crossing through more dangerous routes. Instead, we need humane systems that protect the rights of migrants, refugees, and immigrants, such as welcome centers that provide transportation to final destinations and referrals to legal and social services.
